More about myself
I’m Diego Hernández Dorantes, a creative director and communication designer frequently described as an interdisciplinary designer—though I often fit within the multidisciplinary label as well. My work mainly covers brand identity, editorial, digital, and typographic design, and everything in between. I’ve always loved creating things and thinking about how to arrange, shape, and present elements so they can tell meaningful, unique stories. Aside from my design practice, I enjoy playing tennis, going on hikes, discovering new music, and photographing birds hidden among the trees.
I'm originally from Mexico City and currently based in Vancouver, BC. Here, I completed a Master of Design at Emily Carr University, where I developed a design research thesis under the guidance of talented mentors. I had the chance to collaborate with Katherine Gillieson on Occasional Press, and my research was supported by Cameron Neat and Leo Vicenti—two inspiring designers with whom I had meaningful conversations throughout the process. The result was a piece of research that, to my surprise and great honor, was eventually presented to Ellen Lupton, someone I deeply admire.
I believe design is a powerful practice, almost magical. It helps us give meaning to the world. In our communication through design, even the simplest gestures add a particular sense and shape meaning. As Isamu Noguchi once said: “To order space is to give it meaning.” Design can create transformative narratives that open journeys, connect people, and improve our lives.
